Diversity Chic | Activewear with Kaia Fit North Dallas

No, you’re not dreaming – it has been a WHILE since our last Diversity Chic post. Life happened and February came and went (can we still blame it on the fact that Feb is a short month, even though it’s a Leap Year? That’s what I’m going to do.) You might notice that I’m not in the group photo – that’s because my dang sister decided to have her baby the morning of our shoot. How rude 🙂

Diversity Chic – Poncho Glam

Diversity Chic poncho glamThis month marks one full year of Diversity Chic and honestly…I can’t believe it. If you’re new here…

Diversity Chic is a collaboration of Dallas bloggers showcasing current fashion trends on a variety of skin tones, hair colors, body types and heights. Each month we will feature a new trend tailored to our personalities and style.

Our focus is to explore the world of fashion in its unique, diverse, and stylish manner – one trend at a time.

Click here to see all of last year’s Diversity Chic posts.

Diversity-Chic-Ponchos-1258This collaboration is something that’s really near and dear to my heart. I feel like I gush about it every month but I’m going to go ahead and do it a little more. The world of fashion (although sometimes good changes are made) tends to put people in a box. You have to look, act, feel a certain way and with Diversity Chic we’re proving it wrong one trend at a time. Each of us has a different body type, skin tone, and personal style but every month we bring it, no matter what trend we’re working on. That’s what we want you to do – don’t be hesitant to try out a trend because you don’t look like the girls you see on Pinterest. Just find a way to make it work and freaking WERK IT! Then make sure to use the hashtag #diversitychicinspired on Instagram so we can connect!

Diversity-Chic-Ponchos-1441 Diversity-Chic-Ponchos-1486 Diversity-Chic-Ponchos-1493This month we’re taking it one step further by bringing Christian into the mix! I’ve always had it in the back of my mind that I’d love to bring a guy in for one month and ponchos was a perfect opportunity! Of course, Christian nailed it. I’m loving how each of us styled our poncho in a totally different way!

Diversity-Chic-Ponchos-1506Since I’ve worn a poncho again and again and again and again on this blog, I tried to come up with a look that was really different from what I wore previously. I usually pair ponchos with more casual pieces since they scream comfort but this time around I wanted to go glam. I went a little nuts with the statement jewelry but I think it actually works. With any other look it might be over the top but I’m into it here. I also wore my thrifted Gianni Bini heels to elevate the look even more. (See what I did there…elevated….because they’re heels….)

Diversity Chic – The Perfect Holiday Outfit

Diversity Chic Holiday OutfitsThe holidays are in full swing (Christmas is next week…what?!), which means you’re probably on your last leg of holiday wear. You’ve picked our your ensemble for the holiday party at your work that you embarrassed yourself at (it’s fine, it happens to the best of us) and your New Year’s outfit is ready to go…but if you’re still looking for holiday wear for one last shebang, here’s some killer inspiration.

diversity-chic-holiday-9311Without planning our outfits ahead of time, the three of us showed up to our Diversity Chic shoot in three totally different holiday outfits – each one unique and not what you would expect from typical “holiday wear.” I love how Sevi kept it super traditional with a velvet skirt but then put a whole new twist on it with a black and white striped top (check out her post here). Denise made sure to pull out all the stops with her adorable plaid skort, turtle neck and ivory fur jacket (click here to get the deets on this look). I love both of these looks because they would be appropriate for a fancy holiday celebration or a family gathering.

diversity-chic-holiday-9449 diversity-chic-holiday-9426Dress: ASOS (gifted; similar here, here and here) | Tights: Super old (similar here) | Coat: Thrifted ($50; similar here and here) | Earrings: BaubleBar ($20; similar here) | Booties: Target ($20; exact) | Lips: NYX Liquid Suede Lip Cream in Kitten Heels ($7; exact) | Photos by Stephanie Drenka

I don’t have a lot of “holiday wear” in my closet so, like Denise and Sevi, I had to think outside the box a tad. What’s appropriate for literally every occasion? A little black dress, of course! This little number is from ASOS and I love it! You can’t see it because of my coat but it’s off the shoulder and I LOVE the length. It transitions perfectly from one season to the next and really, I just can’t say enough good things about it.

diversity-chic-holiday-9445 diversity-chic-holiday-9435 diversity-chic-holiday-9432I wanted to make the little black dress feel a little more festive and what’s more festive than sparkle and shine?! Statement jewelry is the perfect way to transition normal basic pieces into something a little more seasonally appropriate. Since I wear statement jewelry pretty regularly, I threw on my favorite metallic booties just to up the ante. Then I finished up the whole look with some lace tights. Guys, if you don’t have lace tights I really cannot recommend them enough. Seems like a weird thing but they go with SO much – I find myself grabbing them more and more. Built in pattern mixing!

diversity-chic-holiday-9446Last but not least…THE COAT. I first debuted this coat last year and I swear I get comments on it every single time I wear it. It’s a vintage coat that was thrifted for me by Ms. Dionne Dean, one of the best Thrift Queens in Dallas! I know early fall is the best time to look for great coats at thrift shops but it can’t hurt to pop in and see what you can find! You never know what someone might have donated, even in the middle of the season.

diversity-chic-holiday-9293I cannot believe we’ve made it a whole year through Diversity Chic! We skipped last month due to crazy schedules and just overall stress but I’m so glad we closed out the year strong this month. This project has been such a blessing to me – working with my favorite people in the world to create something meaningful and inspiring is seriously more than I could have ever asked for. I never thought blogging would introduce me to my best friends and bring so much joy to my life but….there you have it.

As you can tell, Jordan is still hopping all over the US being a girlboss and this month Stephanie decided to hang behind the camera. We’re so thankful Denise was willing to step in and (of course) she did a killer job!

If you’re new around here, make sure to check out the rest of our installments of Diversity Chic here.

Happy holidays to you all! I’ll still be posting regularly throughout the next few weeks! I’ve got some awesome stuff up my sleeve so stay tuned!

Diversity Chic – Vest Dressed

Fall Wardrobe for less than $150

Full discosure: I used to hate wearing vests. I remember when I was REALLY little, I wore them occasionally but once I hit later elementary school/middle school vests were no longer cool and I wanted nothing to do with them. I think they came back a bit when I was in high school (the puffy vests have been pretty resilient – impressive). BUT I still never wore them. In college, I bought a black dressy looking vest (you know the ones) and tragically wore it with v neck t shirts that I stenciled stuff onto and skinny pants. *shudder*

diversity-chic-fall-fashion-vests-3104For this month’s Diversity Chic, we decided to showcase vests of all types that are perfect for fall and winter. I wore my trusty J Crew Herringbone knockoff vest because let’s be honest, I freaking love that thing. Yes it’s fall but it was still crazy hot when we took these photos so I opted for a short sleeved shirt. I love working fall pieces in with short sleeved shirts and shorts when it’s still warmer. It keeps your outfit from looking too summery but also won’t make you sweat through your flannel.

I love this look because it’s all black so it was really easy to put together but the different textures and patterns bring some interest to the look. My combat boots from Target are one of my favorite fall colors, maroon, and I love that they tie in some color without being too flashy. With my crazy hair, I’ve already got enough of a summer look going on, so I am kind of staying away from bright colors for fall and winter.

diversity-chic-fall-fashion-vests-3238diversity-chic-fall-fashion-vests-3223Since it’s fall, I kept my lip color more neutral – I’ve been leaning towards pinks up until recently but I’m slowly transitioning into more nudes and reds. This one in particular has been a go-to favorite! It’s the NYX Liquid Suede Lip Cream in Sandstorm – if you watched my video review and demo on these lippies you know just how much I love this shade. If you haven’t seen it yet, definitely click over and check it out because these things are pretty amazing!

Per usual, you HAVE to check out these other ladies posts! Sevi is wearing an awesome faux sheepskin vest, Stephanie has a gorgeous faux fur vest and Jordan is rocking something that’s on my list right now – the perfect black puffy vest. Totally gonna be replicating all of their looks this fall! Click their names below to get the details on their outfits!

Sevi of Ware is the Vodka | Stephanie Drenka | Jordan of Darling Truly

Per usual, Stephanie Drenka and her trusty sidekick husband Holden really nailed it with these photos. I cannot get enough of the dreamy sun….#goldenhour. Also a huge shoutout to Downtown Carrollton for having this adorable little setup! I’ve been out of town for the last week or so but I’m guessing it’s still there. Even if it’s not, you have to make your way down there! Not only can you visit the always adorable Vintage House, they’ve just opened a new Cane Rosso location and y’all it’s DELISH!

What’s your favorite way to wear a vest for fall? I have too many to count!

Diversity Chic | Saved by the 90s

Diversity Chic 90sThis month’s Diversity Chic has been several months in the making and I’m SO stoked it’s finally here – and at the perfect time! If you’re a 90s kid, you’ve already looked up ALL the details on Nickelodeon’s new programming, The Splat! It’s basically Nick at Nite with all the 90s shows you know and love. I’m a cord cutter so I’ve already started researching how on earth I’m going to get access to this glorious event.

Diversity Chic 90s Dallas Fashion Blogger Valery Brennan358A6106

So if you haven’t figured it out (you need to work on your reading skills) – this month’s Diversity Chic is all about the 90s! Thank goodness the 90s are back in full effect and we each had a different take on the 90s, making sure our looks would easily translate to modern day and I think we nailed it, if I do say so myself!

Diversity-Chic-90s-Dallas-BloggerI went for kind of a cutesy 90s look, thanks to some high waisted polka dot jeans, jellies and a crop top that Denise was kind enough to loan me. If I had to do it all over again, I would definitely throw on a modern statement necklace to make it look less costume-y…what can I say, I was in a rush!

diversity-chic-90s-dallas-fashion-blogger-valery-brennanWhen I got the photos back, I have to say I cringed a little at myself. My curves are in FULL effect in these photos and I was embarrassed at how I looked. But you know what, I’m proud of my curves and I know a lot of you out there reading this are curvy girls too so I’m here to tell you to embrace them! Love what you have and flaunt those curves, girl!

We went to take photos in Deep Ellum without much of a plan except to find some cool art. Little did we know, that an incredible nostalgia-ridden mural would appear and it was ONLY up that week! Had we taken our photos a week before or a week after, it wouldn’t be there. Incredible. Side note: yes, we know not all the things featured are from the 90s but hey…it’s pretty close.

Diversity Chic | Perfectly Plaid

clean out closet

First off, SORRY I’ve been MIA! I’ve been doing a lot of behind the scenes stuff to really improve this blog all the way around. Nothing will be dramatically different to you guys but thanks for your patience while I figure this out. I’m SO glad it’s time for Diversity Chic so I could finally post again! If you’re new around here:

Diversity Chic is a collaboration of Dallas bloggers showcasing current fashion trends on a variety of skin tones, hair colors, body types and heights. Each month we will feature a new trend tailored to our personalities and style.

Our focus is to explore the world of fashion in its unique, diverse, and stylish manner – one trend at a time.

To be perfectly, honest, this month started with a “picnic plaid theme” but once we all chose our outfits and realized it would be 100 degrees….that just wasn’t going to happen. Since gingham tends to have a very retro 1950s feel, Stephanie had the fabulous idea of shooting in front of a classic diner and Jordan suggested classic Coke bottles and it was PERFECTION.

When possible, I try to shop my own closet first when we choose our theme and the only plaid I have is flannel shirts. NOT okay for summer. After some soul searching and realizing I wouldn’t survive in a flannel shirt (even just for a photoshoot), I decided to find something to tie it around! Enter: the stripe and floral tunic. Pattern mixing GALORE!

I love that each of us wore a different plaid piece – without even consulting each other first! Jordan (of course) has a super chic top that can be dressed up or down, Sevi is wearing a darling A-line skirt and Stephanie is wearing a chic and comfy shirtdress that I might just steal out of her closet. Make sure to check out each of these ladies’ posts!

That’s less than I paid for my look – dang Converse ate up $40 of my budget! Of course it’s even better if you can use some of the stuff you already have in your closet, you don’t have to make it look EXACTLY like what I wore!

Diversity Chic | Summer Sandals + Flirty Florals

Diversity-Chic-Sandals-and-Floralsweb This day is the absolute best because not only is it Thursday Threads….it’s also Diversity Chic day!!! This month we opted to go for two trends and tackle floral and sandals at once – both huge trends that are bound to make an appearance every summer! I’m going to go ahead and apologize in advance for how….glowy I am….it was hot, y’all! Sweating is just nature’s highlighter haha. How Stephanie managed to take all these photos of us AND still look glam, I will never know!!! Dallas-Fashion-Bloggers-Diversity-Chic-Floral-0829 I haven’t really been into super feminine florals lately, so I combined two of my more abstract floral patterns from my closet. The top is from the Prabal Gurung for Target collection from a few years ago – I’ve been eyeing it for a while and finally broke down and bought it on eBay a few weeks ago for less than $10 (including shipping)! The skirt is an awesome greyscale floral pattern A-line that you’ve probably seen on the blog before. Dallas-Fashion-Bloggers-Diversity-Chic-Floral-0436 Dallas-Fashion-Bloggers-Diversity-Chic-Floral-0466 Dallas-Fashion-Bloggers-Diversity-Chic-Floral-0451 Dallas-Fashion-Bloggers-Diversity-Chic-Floral-0431 As far as sandals go….I rarely wear sandals. For the most part, I just don’t like them on me. I just don’t like them that much, plus I have super long toes so I feel like they never fit me right! I found these white platform heels at Target and fell in LOVE. Spice Girls, anyone?! I knew they HAD to be mine and I’m so happy I got them! They’re comfortable, lightweight and easy to walk in….cannot recommend these platforms enough. All of my 90s dreams are coming true with these platforms…if you read this you KNOW how much I love the Spice Girls. Girl Power! WANT MORE: Catch up on our Diversity Chic posts here! Diversity Chic | Rooty Tooty Fresh and Fruity

Summer means bright colors, short hem lines and lots of sweet treats! For this month’s Diversity Chic, we decided to go with “fruits” as the featured trend, especially with the ever-growing popularity of the pineapple. To be honest, it wasn’t easy for me to find something to wear – I’m just not a fruit wearing girl! Never have been! BUT the beauty of Diversity Chic is to show that no matter what your body types, skin tone or personal style, you can embrace current trends.

Instead of a fruit print article of clothing, I chose to go with accessories! I found this adorable grapefruit bag at Modcloth (sold out now, I’m SORRY!) and when I saw these watermelon socks on clearance, they found their way into my shopping cart too! Putting an outfit together with these loud, bright accessories wasn’t easy, so I decided neutrals would make a nice backdrop. I know, I know, grey and black aren’t exactly “summer” colors, but whatever, I do what I want! Plus bright jewelry, socks, shoes and bag is enough color for me. I wanted to let the accessories do the talking.

Necklace: Bauble Bar ($48; exact) and Michael’s ($8; similar, on clearance!) | Shirt: Forever 21 (gifted; similar) | Skirt: Express (gifted; similar) | Socks: Modcloth ($6; similar only $2.50!) | Bag: Modcloth ($45; adorable pineapple purse) | Shoes: TJ Maxx ($20; similar) | Lips: OCC Lip Tar in Mannequin ($16; exact)

Photos by Stephanie Drenka 🙂

Is anyone else as obsessed with Jordan’s dress as I am?! Really considering buying one for myself. I also love how Stephanie took the fruit trend (which is typically really casual) and elevated it with a nice midi skirt for a more dressy look. And of course Sevi rocked it with a glammed out pineapple shirt – I love how she rounded out the look with the military inspired jacket…the rule of threes strikes again!

Thanks so much to Lyn’s Snow Cones in Carrollton for letting us use your adorable backdrop! Y’all this place is DELISH – if you’re in the area, definitely make sure to stop by. I highly recommend coconut with cream…get the white coconut so you don’t end up with blue teeth 🙂

Don’t forget to check out the rest of our Diversity Chic installments if you’ve missed any, we’ve already conquered Marsala, Leopard Print, Bohemian, Pastels and A Line Skirts. What will we do next?! Honestly, we’re not sure yet so stay tuned! 🙂

Diversity Chic | Skirting the Rules

Have y’all missed Diversity Chic as much as I have? I’ve been ITCHING to do this post since we came up with the theme and I’m so glad it’s here! In case you missed our first few installments of Diversity Chic (is this number five already?!), here’s what we’re all about:

Diversity Chic is a collaboration of Dallas bloggers showcasing current fashion trends on a variety of skin tones, hair colors, body types and heights. Each month we will feature a new trend tailored to our personalities and style.

Our focus is to explore the world of fashion in its unique, diverse, and stylish manner – one trend at a time.

This month, we’re featuring the ultra feminine silhouette that’s perfect for ANY body type…the A Line skirt. As you can see, they come in all kinds of patterns and colors and I’m crazy about every single one of them. You can see some of my past outfits featuring A-Line skirts here, here, here and here.

The best part about A-Lines (besides the fact that they universally flatter every body type by accentuating the smallest part of the body) is you can dress them up or down as much as you want, depending on the occasion! Graphic T, printed blouse (like Stephanie rocked), chambray shirt, tank top, fitted t shirt (Sevi even worked some pattern mixing in), sleeveless button down (bonus points if you tie it like Jordan)…you name it, it works with an A-Line. I would say the only “rule” with A-lines is you want to make sure the waist is defined. If you wear an untucked flowy shirt, you’re going to look larger since the skirt is flowy. Tuck or tie your top and you’re good to go!

Shirt: Cents of Style ($15ish; similar; similar; similar for less than $10!) | Skirt: Poppy and Dot ($31; similar; similar) | Shoes: DSW ($20; similar; similar) | Necklace, earrings and bracelet: Rocksbox ($19/month, use code valerybrennanxoxo for a free month!)

Thanks so much to Esther Huynh for these beautiful photos! Make sure to follow Esther on Instagram, she has the DREAMIEST account! Also thanks to the Vintage House for providing the perfect spring setting for our photos. If you’re near Carrollton, stop by this adorable pink house for a HUGE selection of gifts and pretty things.

And here’s one more because the pink walls at the Vintage House are just TOO gorgeous…

What will we choose for next month’s trend?! Actually we already have June AND July picked out but you’ll just have to stay tuned to find out!

How to Wear Pastels – Diversity Chic

If there’s one trend that comes back every single spring season, it’s pastels. No matter what else is happening in fashion, you can ALWAYS expect to see an influx of pastels come March. Unfortunately for me, I’ve always been a ghost so I don’t exactly gravitate towards pastels (except my hair).

So why did I suggest pastels for this month’s Diversity Chic? I will never know. We DID get yogurt as part of the shoot though, and I’m all about that.

Photos by Stephanie Drenka

Right off the bat, I knew shoes would be the anchor for my outfit. I actually purchased these heels to go with my bridesmaid’s dress for a wedding I was in. Since they’re the perfect soft peach, I knew I had to bring them back out for this shoot!

Now let’s talk about this shirt, y’all. I know. I can’t even deal with it. Thankfully my husband has a huge man crush on Jeff Goldblum so he had zero issues with me ordering this bad boy (and actually told me he was going to try to steal it!) The all-over print is absolutely perfect, especially paired with the 90’s geometric accents. Not to mention the shirt is crazy comfortable.

To dress it up a little, I paired it with my faux leather pencil skirt and heels. If you have a crazy graphic t like this, I always recommend pairing it with things that are a little more “grown up” so you look pulled together. In my opinion, even untucked with a knit pencil skirt would be a better option than wearing it with leggings or jeans. Also if I’m going to spend $55 on a t shirt I’m NOT going to look like a slob while I wear it!

Shirt: Clashist ($55; exact) | Skirt: Forever 21 ($18; exact) | Shoes: Shoe Dazzle ($15; exact/low stock; similar; similar) | Earrings: Kendra Scott via Rocksbox ($19/month) | Necklace: Perry Street via Rocksbox ($19/month) | Lashes: Ulta ($3.50; exact) | This lip color has terrible staying power so I’m not linking it 🙂

Recognize my jewelry? Yep, it’s my Rocksbox jewelry from my last post! And now it’s on the way back to them and my new box will be here soon – don’t forget to sign up for your own free month!

Now that Diversity Chic has a few months under our belts, can I just say how thankful I am to be a part of this project? We have so much fun doing it and it’s really such a joy to be able to come together and show how no matter what your skin color, body type or personal style is, you can rock any trend!
