I think pretty much everyone has that ONE piece in their closet that they love but can never wear for one reason or another. For me, the thorn in my side was this gorgeous white faux fur vest. I love love love it because it’s soft, over the top and the perfect winter white but for some reason, I could never wear it. No matter what I paired it with, it just didn’t work for me.
Finally one day I told myself I HAD to wear it. The vest had been sitting in my closet starting at me for a year and I was going to wear it or just get rid of it. Giving myself an ultimatum was the best motivation I could’ve asked for.
I tried on countless things until I realized the problem – I didn’t like how the vest looked against dark colors…which is basically my whole closet. Finally I grabbed this light grey sweater that I thrifted for $1 and it was perfect! Then I added a few more favorites and my look was complete.

I don’t ever want to have something sit in my closet for an entire year ever again, so I’ve come up with a system for getting myself to wear those amazing statement pieces that are a little tricky. And if these steps don’t work? Then it’s time to donate or sell it and let someone else figure it out! I know you’ve got some stuff that’s just sitting in your closet so follow these steps and rock them.
- Browse Pinterest! Duh. Just search for outfit ideas for whatever the item is, odds are you’ll get some great options! Pin those and make sure to take note of what you like and dislike about each combo and how you can recreate it with what you already have in your closet. (And while you’re at it, follow me on Pinterest here!)
- Try on anything and everything. Just start pulling stuff out of your closet and try on anything, even if you think it might look weird. Then, same as above, take note of what you like and don’t like, and adjust from there.
- Ask a friend! Text your friend a photo and ask them what they think it might go with – chances are they’ll have an opinion. I know for me it’s much easier for me to come up with outfit ideas for someone else than it is for myself.
- Give yourself an ultimatum. “Wear it in a week, or else it goes away.” If you don’t make the effort to wear it by then, then you probably don’t really like it anyway.
That’s it! I promise if you follow those four easy steps you’re totally going to rock all those random impulse buys you’ve made over the last year. 🙂
